About Us At I'll Stand By You All Breed Pet Rescue it is our goal to match the right pet to the right family, not simply to get the pet adopted. For this reason our adoption application form asks a lot of questions. These questions are not designed to judge you but simply to help us, help you, to find the right match. Adopting a new pet can be a very emotional experience & it is often easier to think with the heart than the head :-) We are here to help the 'head' think clearly about finding the right match. This important not only for the pet but also for you & your family to have a positive experience and long life with your new family member. It's important to think ahead to what's down the road in your future & whether or not a particular dog/cat will be well suited to that future. For example a dog 5yrs old now, will be 10yrs old if you plan a family five years down the road. And the dog will be 11yrs old when the baby starts to walk using tables, chairs, and dog for support. Some dogs will be fine with this BUT an 11yr old dog might be starting to get hard of hearing or the eyesight might not be as good, or arthritis could be setting in. All of these things could affect how the dog will be able to tolerate a toddler. Or you might like a dog that is not good with children, thinking that you don't have any now, but .... what does the future hold? If the dog is not good with children now, he/she will not be good with them later. So we are here to be the voice of reason to help you find just the right pet for your family

How It All Started

I'll Stand By You All Breed Pet Rescue came about when I received an email with an urgent plea to help save some death row dogs in Kentucky. They were at a rescue that was closing down & had to be moved before the county animal control came to seize and euthanize them. I'm not even sure how or why that email found its way to me. But the dogs tugged at my heartstrings and I thought it would be my "good deed" for Christmas, & so I arranged to bring four dogs up to Ontario. I had already been fostering dogs for JRTRO so fostering/placing dogs was not a new adventure. After the four Kentucky dogs got settled into new homes, I heard about a couple of local dogs that needed saving, and then someone alerted me to Chance the Catahoula who needed help, and then things just snowballed from there. We live on a small hobby farm near Hagersville, Ontario and we have a kennel licence & a small kennel. The rescued dogs come here, then go into foster homes to await adoption. My experience with animals is vast. I have been an active competitor in the dog sport fancy for 25yrs, & I spent 14yrs working in the veterninary field as a vet assistant & receptionist, and I also worked as a vet tech at the Mississauga Veterinary Emergency Clinic. After leaving the veterinary field, I managed a boarding kennel for 2yrs. I have been a professional dog trainer for the past 20yrs. My school is called Lifestyle Dog Training http://lifestyledogtraining.blogspot.com/ & I spent a year and a half teaching obedience classes for the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA. I have written two published books on dog training and many articles for a variety of dog magazines, and I foster dogs for Jack Russell Rescue Ontario. I have no outside funding to support the animals that I take in ... everything comes out of my own pocket. The Stray Dogs Prayer Dear God, Please send me somebody who'll care! I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair My body is aching, it's so racked with pain And dear God, I pray as I run in the rain That someone will love me and give me a home A warm cozy bed and a big juicy bone My last owner tied me all day in the yard Sometimes with no water and God, that was hard! So I chewed my leash God and I ran away To rummage in garbage and lie as a stray But now God, I'm tired and hungry and cold And I'm so afraid that I'll never grow old They've chased me with sticks, hit me with stones While I run the streets just looking for bones! This is Lightning. He is a 7yr old jack russell terrier. Lightning belonged to a senior couple in Toronto. Sadly his human mom passed away after a year long battle with lung cancer, and shortly after that his human dad was in need of a triple heart bypass surgery, after which he simply did not have the strength to look after Lightning. Lightning had been a boarding client for 6yrs so it was only natural that he be surrendered to our rescue. I felt so bad for this little man, I cried when he lost his family. Lightning is a bit of a 'special needs' fellow due to his temperament. He is not a dog that you can pick up whenever you feel like it. And he is not a super cuddle bunny. He will come and lie with you if it suits him. Things must be done on his terms & he needs to be dealt with without confrontation. He is who he is. He just does not like to be handled too much. His owners cherished him & worked around his sometimes grumpy attitude. If you can open your heart and home to Lightning and learn how to handle him on his terms, he is a super little man with a great sense of humour. He loves to do his tricks for you .... roll over, dance, sit pretty. And his favourite game is "bubbles". He loves to jump up and catch bubbles! He also loves to take a shower with you if you are inclined to allow him in. His owners kept him clean by letting him come in the shower and play in the water! Lightning is crate trained. He lived in an apartment so he is used to apartment living & would be suited to that lifestyle. He is recommended for an adult home only. He walks well on leash & loves to keep all the squirrels in the neighbourhood in check.

Cracker: Cracker is an approximately 2yr old Hound x Terrier. He was abandoned, along with another dog, and left to fend for himself. When Cracker first came into rescue it was apparent that there was something wrong with his left hind leg. When he went in for neutering we had his leg/hip xrayed and discovered that his left hip was completely displaced ..probably the result of an impact injury. Cracker had a Femoral Head Osteotomy (FHO) operation in early May. Currently Cracker is in foster care & he is a great little dog. He is crate trained and house trained & has wonderful house manners. His preferred sleeping spots are the bed and the sofa! He's living the good life now!! Cracker is a gentle & loving dog & he loves his cuddles and just can't get enough. Being that he was (a) stray, and (b) part hound ....Cracker is not a candidate for "off leash" hiking ..... he must be "on leash" when outside of a securely fenced area. A securely fenced hound proof yard will be a MUST for Crackers adoptive family. Cracker can be vocal at times so he is not suitable for apartment/condo living .... the neighbours would not be happy :-) Cracker gets along well with other dogs.

Cracker has fully recovered from his surgery & is available for adoption to a special home.

Buster: Buster is a 6yr old Labrador x Boxer. He is gentle loving dog who loves affection. He was an owner surrender coming from a family that did not understand him & who used confrontational training methods, which resulted in Buster developing fear anxiety. Since coming into rescue Buster has blossomed. He is no longer fearful or anxious, although he can be a wee bit shy in new situations. He is a fun loving happy dog. Buster is crate trained & house trained. Buster gets along well with other dogs although his 'boxer' heritage gives him a rather rough & tumble play style with other dogs. He loves to go for walks & romps at the dog park.

Bates: Bates is an approximately 3yr old Coonhound. He is a gentle & loving fellow. Like all hounds though, Bates is not a candidate for 'off leash' hiking .... hounds once loose will follow their noses ... so this is an 'on leash' hiking dog. A securely fenced yard (6ft fence) will be a MUST for Bates adoptive home. Bates loves his walks & hikes, and walks well in harness. Bates can be vocal at times, so is not suitable to be an apartment/condo living dog. Bates is crate trained and house trained. He is currently training in the H.O.P.E program. He does need some more work on house manners but he is a wonderful dog who love a nice quiet home. Bates is good with other dogs.

Blue: Blue is a 5yr old Cattle Dog mix. Blue was an owner surrender to a high kill shelter in Kentucky. Blue loves to go for on leash hikes & is an affectionate boy. He is crate trained & house trained, & he gets along well with other dogs. Blue is a love bug & is currently training in the H.O.P.E program

Blue is recommended for an adult home

Bright is a two year old female Yellow Lab/Rottweiller Mix. She is a beautiful golden color with just a few wrinkles on her face and the softest coat! Bright is a very people-focused and attentive dog. While Bright has never met a human that she doesn't like, she is a bit pickier when it comes to her doggie friends. Bright doesn't mind sharing her house with cats, though. Bright has an especially calm demeanor with children. While a dog her size could easily be intimidating, Bright prefers to simply lean in for love and hugs. Bright is a very easy girl to work with as she just wants to please you! From her foster family before she came to Ontario: We are the foster family that Bright originally went to. We have a large, predominantly male dog pack at our house. I believe Bright's issue with our other dogs simply came from her insecurity and trying to determine her place in our pack. She does have a more dominant than submissive personality, but I don't believe it is an alpha personality. I believe she would prosper in an environment with just one or two other dogs. She engaged in play MANY times with certain dogs as well. She did seem to prefer dogs her size and smaller. I can't stress enough what a terrific people-focused girl Bright is. She was EXCELLENT with our kids, seeming to know immediately that her large size could intimidate and accidentally hurt them--And compensating by slowing down when approaching them and leaning in for pets. She had no interest in the cats and was very easy to crate. She has been spayed, is HW negative, and completely vetted. Unfortunately, there simply aren't any other foster homes that we can move Bright to--We only have two to begin with! This poor girl is currently in boarding...which is NOT the place for a dog as people-loving as Bright. Is there any rescue with a foster home available for this girl? We will personally include $50 sponsorship to any approved rescue that can offer this girl what we couldn't. Bright is spayed and up to date with vaccines & she will be microchipped before going to her new home. **Bright is considered not to be good with other dogs (as per the comment she is pickier about her canine friends). Her foster home in the States said that although she did get along well with some dogs, if she didn't ... it was bad. For this reason Brights adopters need to know that she is NOT a dog park candidate and should be considered an "only" dog. Bright is a wonderful affectionate girl but should be an "only child" Adoption Fee = $300.00 _____________________________________________

This is Tah'ree. She is a female Lab mix approx. 50lbs. She is spayed & vaccinated. Tah'ree is a beautiful well trained girl who will sit, stay, give you five, and lay down all on hand signals. She will stay out of the kitchen while meals are being prepared and will go lay on her mat on command. As a pup Tah'ree was a high energy dog, playing happily at the dog park with other dogs of all ages and sizes. She still loves to play fetch and frisbee, and to be in the water, but after 30min or so she's happy to sleep in a sunbeam. Tah'ree lived with a 15yr old spaniel and was gentle and respectful of him & would stop playing when the older dog got tired. Tah'ree was surrendered to rescue because she was living with a three year old toddler who did not respect her ... she had played well with him under supervision since he was 1, but as he got older and rougher with Tah’ree, she has became less patient with him. He ran cars and other toys into her and she would bark and air snap in pain or surprise.

Tah'ree would do well in an adult home or a home with older children (12+) who will treat her with kindness and respect. Since Tah'ree is an owner surrender we have a lot of information about her ..... Tah'ree spent the first 2yrs of her life living in British Columbia on 50 acres by a lake. She absolutely LOVES playing in the water. After that she and her family moved to Indiana to suburban life. Tah’ree is still not used to cars or traffic. She should be on a leash near roads. She does not like thunder or fireworks. If she can cuddle up to you during the storm she does fine. If she is alone she will bark and hide under a desk or in a closet. Vacuums and balloons also scare her, she will find a room far away from either. Her mat is considered her “safe place” . She is trained with the command of “Go to your mat” and no matter where she is in the house she will go lay down on her blanket (or whatever you assign as her “mat.”) Her owner reports, "We have also assigned a coat, towel, etc as her “mat” when we are out hiking or on a picnic. This way she knows where is a good place for her to be even when we are away from home". She does not protect toys & she has been learning to retrieve toys by name. She can be instructed, “Go get your ball” or Rope, Squeaky, Donut, Hedgehog, Leash, etc. and she will root around her toy bag or mat area until she finds the right one then will bring it to you to play. Tah'ree's owner also reports, "Tah’ree also knows the command “Get out of the kitchen.” When she was young she would always be underfoot when I was cooking, looking for scraps. So I taught her “Get out of the kitchen” to mean lay down at the kitchen entrance (where the rug ends and the linoleum starts). She will now go right to that spot whenever I start cooking. When we move she has to be reminded to “stay out of the kitchen” but falls back into the habit quickly. Anything that we were teaching her was not okay to play with was called “Human.” For example, if she found and wanted to play with a beanie baby she was told “no, that’s human.” She understands this well and we have not had a problem with her chewing our things. Since she was young we worked with touching Tah’ree’s paws, mouth, belly, ears and legs. So she doesn’t mind being handled, even when the vet needs to give shots. She is very affectionate towards us and prefers to sit anywhere she can touch us."

Tah'ree is distrustful of men in hats &/or uniforms. (since being in foster we have not noticed this ... she has been fine with men in hats) She will also 'car guard' at times. Tah'ree also knows some tricks .... she will speak/bark in response to the cue "What?" .... you can see some video of Tah-ree at http://www.youtube.com/user/mrstahree

This is Casey. She is a 6yr old Lab x Chow. Casey is housetrained & loves to play fetch. She will retrieve balls, sticks, toys, and she catches frisbees like a pro! Casey is good with other dogs but can get a little resource guardy with them when it comes to "high value" items such as food or bones. She is NOT resource guardy with people though. Casey has attended basic obedience classes with her former family. She is an owner surrender due to circumstances beyond their control. Casey would be best suited to an active adult home, or a home with children over the age of 10yrs. She would be an excellent candidate for dog sports!! Casey has a few dog tricks up her sleeve as well ..... sit pretty, shake a paw, and roll over

This is Spot. He is a cattle dog x border collie. Spot is three & a half years of age. He was an owner surrender to a high kill shelter in Kentucky (reason given was divorce). Spot is high energy & will require some obedience training based in positive reinforcement. Spot is currently enrolled in the HOPE program (Help Our Pets Excel) which is an obedience program for dogs awaiting adoption.

We have already had Spot vaccinated, HW tested (result neg), and neutered

A Word On Adoption Fees: adoption fees are kept as low as possible and the purpose of adoption fees is to pay for spay/neuter; vaccines; microchipping; plus the board & keep and everyday expenses incurred in caring for these animals on a daily basis. We encourage you to check out the costs of spay/neuter/vaccines/microchips so that you can appreciate just what a good deal the adoption fees are. Jess was abandoned along with another dog & lived stray for 4mths before a good samariton befriended the 2 dogs, gained their trust, and brought them in. Jess was adopted by her foster family & is now living happily in Burlington, Ontario

Lil Jackie found herself homeless when her owner died. She ended up in a high kill Ohio shelter & from there, came here. Lil Jackie has been adopted by a wonderful family & is now living happily in Kingston, Ontario

Thea (now named Bailey) came to us from a shelter in Ohio where she was slated to be euthanized at only 9mths of age. Thea is now a cherished family member to her new owners in Toronto

Roxy was an owner surrender due to her owners health. She is now a cherished family member to her new owners in Port Dover

Artemis was a dog we fostered for JRTRO. She was successfully adopted and now living on a horse farm in Goderich.

Bailey was rescued from death row in a Kentucky shelter. She now lives in Peterborough, Ontario where she shares her home with another hound and people who love her

Herman was a foster dog for JRTRO. He was found as a stray & taken to the local animal control and then transferred to a humane society and subsequently adopted out. He was returned to the shelter and slated for euthanasia, when one of the shelter staff called JRTRO for help to save Herman. JRTRO called me to assess him & I went and got him out of the shelter & fostered him here. Herman is a 'perfect' dog! He is now living in Toronto with a couple who adore him!

Destiny is a border collie who was picked up as a stray in rural Ohio & ended up in the shelter on death row. Destiny & her new family now divide their time between city life in Oakville and cottage life in Haliburton. Destiny has found her destiny!

Taylor was rescued from the gas chamber in an Ohio shelter at just 4mths of age. Not even old enough to have done anything wrong in life > his only crime was being born into a home that didn't want him. Taylor is now living happily in Hamilton, Ontario.

This is Molly (re-named Bambi by her new family). Molly was rescued from death row at a high kill Kentucky shelter. She was only 8mths of age .... just a baby & such a sweet little dog. Molly was adopted by a wonderful family in Thornhill, Ontario

This Sam, one of the dogs from Athens, Ohio. Sam was in rescue for 7mths prior to being adopted & his adoption was a direct result of the Pet Funfest & Adopt-a-Pet-Athon show put on by Helping Homeless Pets. It was at this show that Sam met his new owner. Karolyn was smitten and followed up after the show to apply to adopt Sam. Thank You to Helping Homeless Pets for putting on the Pet Funfest, and for allowing us to participate.

This is Skimmer, one of the dogs I fostered for JRTRO. Skimmer was adopted after a couple of months in foster care here. Skimmer hit the jackpot with his new home > he is a cherished companion and finally living the life he deserves.

This little kitty was one of the rescue kittens we took in this summer. He is now living in Georgetown where he is a much loved companion.

Three of the rescue kittens that I bottle raised summer 2009. As the cold weather approached it became urgent to move these little ones off the farm, as our 'overflow' kennel building is not heated & therefore not used during the winter. We were very fortunate that Toronto Cat Rescue took them into their program. We paid to have them vaccinated so that they could enter the program. They are pictured here at the Pet Valu store in Toronto. Pet Valu does not "sell" animals > they just provide a foster home for the cats/kittens in the Toronto Cat Rescue program.

Higgins was adopted by a family in Bradford. Higgins is Charlotte's littermate. Higgins is one of the dogs that came up from Athens, Ohio.

Jed is the dog that was hit by a car & had a broken hip. He was picked up by animal control & taken to a local vet clinic for help. Jed had surgery to remove the hip joint (an excision) and came here for post surgical re-hab & adoption. Jed was adopted on trial but returned to become a member of our dog family.

Tiny Tim (now named Teddy) was found as a very young puppy wandering on a rural road in Ontario. He was underweight, flea infested, and had 30 ticks on his head! After appropriate veterinary care & a few weeks of good nutrition, Teddy was adopted by a family in Brantford. He is pictured above at 7wks of age and 1yr of age

Gunner a foxhound from Kentucky > we brought Gunner into rescue just after Christmas 2008 and then after fostering him for quite some time, decided to keep him. Gunner helps me teach family dog training classes (as my demo dog) and he was recently hired to appear on 2 episodes of the television show The Murdoch Mysteries

This Charlotte. She came to us from a shelter in Athens, Ohio along with her littermate Higgins. Charlotte has been adopted by a wonderful family in Oakville, Ontario

"Chance" > a catahoula cur originally from Louisiana. He was an owner surrender to BARK in Louisiana, was transferred from BARK to the spca in Hamilton, adopted out to a family in Hamilton who re-homed him to someone else in Hamilton, who re-homed him to someone in Simcoe. All by 10mths of age!!! He was on his way to the local pound where he would certainly have met death as his fate (having been through so many homes he would have been deemed unadoptable). Fortunately I heard about him in time and was able to get him from his owner. Chance stayed with me for 6wks before being adopted by a wonderful fellow in Port Dover, Ontario. Chance is now living the life he deserves and he is a cherished companion to his new owner.

Huck was one of the dogs that came up from Hilltop Haven Rescue & Halfway House in Kentucky. He was one of the death row dogs that we pulled xmas 2008. Huck went to a friend of mine in Toronto & was later rehomed. He is now living in Toronto.

Jiffy > Jiffy was a dog I fostered for Jack Russell Terrier Rescue Of Ontario. Jiffy was rescued from an animal shelter in Ontario where he was slated to be euthanized. They said he barked too much. He had external signs of bark collar damage to his throat. Jiffy is only 1yr old and is a very sweet boy. Ginger > She is a retriever mix. Ginger grew too big and too rambunctious for her family which included 3 small children. Ginger was surrendered at 4mths of age and was successfully adopted.

Winter & her kittens. Winter was a stray cat that showed up on the farm in the winter of 2006. She was half starved and pregnant. I found her rifling through my garbage. She was skin and bones and frost bitten, but she pulled through and had 4 beautiful kittens. All 4 kittens found wonderful new homes, and we decided to keep Winter

Skippy > Skippy is a jack russell terrier that we fostered for Jack Russell Terrier Rescue Of Ontario. He was 5yrs old and was picked up as a stray while his owner was away. He'd been hit by a car and dislocated his hip. When his owner went to claim him from the animal control shelter where he was being held, she was given a huge vet bill that she could not afford to pay. (Skippy's vet treatment was just xrays) The animal control shelter therefore refused to give her the dog. Skippy was sent to JRTRO but the rescue was not told the identity of the original owner. Skippy was in foster care for several months prior to being adopted.

Max > another foster for JRTRO. Max was successfully adopted after a couple of months in foster care.

Jack was a foster dog for JRTRO > he is now living with his new owners in Cookstown, Ontario

Dundee > border collie > successfully re-homed

The Ducks! > these ducks were from a batch of ducklings that fell out of the cargo hold of a plane. They are pictured here as adults. We brought them to our farm when an urgent plea went out to save them. They were then successfully re-homed to a hobby farm in Rockwood where they have their own private pond and island.
